Polaris Bank, in partnership with the Nigeria Conservation Foundation (NCF), has flagged off a tree-planting initiative in Rivers State to promote environmental sustainability and tackle the impacts of climate change. The exercise was held at Bodo City Girls Secondary School in Gokana Local Government Area.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Ejike Aroh, Business Development Manager at Polaris Bank’s Garrison Branch, represented the Divisional Head for South-South, Mr. Raphael Abiaziem. He explained that the initiative aligns with the bank’s sustainability agenda and the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, while also reinforcing its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) commitments.
“This project is not just about planting trees—it’s about protecting our environment, cutting down carbon emissions, and creating climate awareness,” Abiaziem noted. “By planting fruit and economic trees, we are strengthening communities, boosting food security, and reviving degraded ecosystems.”
He added that collective action is essential in addressing climate change and encouraged other financial institutions to take the lead in driving sustainable practices that ensure a greener future.
The Nigeria Conservation Foundation praised Polaris Bank for its proactive role. According to the foundation, the chosen tree species—including avocado and native pear—will provide shade, prevent erosion, serve as windbreakers, and produce fruits for both students and the host community.
Mr. Alex Jorbedom, NCF Field Officer, further emphasized the benefits of fruit-bearing trees. “We plan to plant 500 trees here, each secured with mesh. Our team will also return to guide students on their importance and maintenance,” he explained.
This tree-planting campaign is part of Polaris Bank’s wider sustainability agenda, which integrates climate responsibility with community development. Through such initiatives, the bank continues to demonstrate leadership in driving positive environmental and social impact.
