FirstBank is preparing to launch a range of tailored financial services for customers who are blind, partially sighted, or physically challenged across its branches.
The initiative highlights the bank’s continued push for financial inclusion and diversity. Beyond disability-focused services, FirstBank also emphasizes gender balance—women make up about 41% of its workforce, with 37% in leadership roles. The FirstBank Women Network further supports women’s growth within the organization, while the bank’s partnership with UN Women reinforces its alignment with global principles of equality and nondiscrimination.
Speaking on the development, Patrick Akhidenor, Chief Risk Officer and Chairman of the bank’s Sustainability Committee, said the goal is to ensure that “everyone has access to financial services, whether physically or digitally.” He stressed that the bank is committed to creating secure, affordable, and accessible solutions that empower visually impaired and physically challenged customers to independently manage their finances.
The rollout, which will happen in phases, will span all FirstBank subsidiaries and outlets. Customers can expect features such as transaction documents in braille, audio, large print, and digital formats; ATMs with voice guidance and high-contrast displays; as well as debit cards with tactile marks and braille inscriptions. Security tools, including soft PINs and tokens, will also be upgraded for safe access. To support awareness, product brochures will be made available in braille and audio formats.
This move is consistent with Nigeria’s Central Bank financial inclusion drive and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, both of which promote equal financial access.
With these steps, FirstBank is positioning itself as a leader in inclusive banking, aiming to empower individuals with disabilities to handle their finances with independence and confidence.
