Seplat Energy Plc, one of Nigeria’s leading independent energy companies, believes that domestic gas holds the key to unlocking prosperity across Africa. From powering homes and industries to providing a cleaner alternative for cooking and transport, the company’s focus is firmly set on expanding gas infrastructure and access across the continent.
Speaking at the 2025 Africa Energy Week in Cape Town, Seplat’s Director of New Energy, Okechukwu Mba, explained that gas should not be seen merely as an export product but as a foundation for national development. According to him, Seplat is investing heavily in gas processing facilities, pipelines, and LPG and CNG systems, all aimed at strengthening local energy access. He noted that the company currently supplies five power plants, demonstrating its commitment to connecting gas production with electricity generation for Nigerian homes.
However, Mba also highlighted persistent challenges in areas like transmission, distribution, pricing, and sector liquidity. He emphasized that unless these bottlenecks are resolved, the full potential of gas in driving Africa’s growth will remain untapped.
Seplat’s expansion plans include increasing its operated gas production to over one billion standard cubic feet per day by 2030. This growth will come from a combination of pipeline gas for industries and power plants, LPG production from the Bonny River Terminal and upcoming facilities in Sapele and the ANOH gas plant, and CNG systems designed to reach areas not yet connected by pipelines. These initiatives aim to provide cleaner energy solutions while reducing dependence on biomass for cooking.
Chioma Afe, Seplat’s Director of External Affairs and Social Performance, added that environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards must reflect Africa’s unique realities. She stressed that while global ESG frameworks are valuable, they must be adapted to local contexts that consider community needs, climate challenges, and socio-economic conditions. By doing so, energy projects can deliver real value to host communities while promoting sustainable growth.
Seplat’s vision ties closely to Africa’s broader development goals. The company believes that domestic gas can drive industrialization, improve energy security, and promote inclusive growth. Achieving this, however, will depend on supportive government policies, fair pricing systems, and continuous investment in infrastructure.
